Lakisha Dawson-Barnum is a graduate of Albany State University with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Master's of Education in School Counseling. She is certified in School Counseling and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision. Born in Sylvester, GA, Lakisha knew at an early age that she wanted to be in the helping profession and impact and motivate individuals' lives. The oldest of 5 siblings, with a single mother, Lakisha was made very aware of the concept, “It takes a village to raise a child.” However, it is the struggles and sacrifices that she made that molded her into the woman that she is today. In addition, she is a first generational college graduate as well. Her passion for the future and strong “Faith in God” are what keep her motivated on a day to day basis. Lakisha has studied different levels of diversity, society, and social issues, including behaviorism, issues dealing with the family and the environment. She also has worked with children on different levels as well. In previous years she has worked with children and adults with behavior disorders and mental disorders that include ADHD, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, while assessing and developing care plans. Her mission in life is to continue to grow and develop an understanding of human behavior as it relates to me and others. Her philosophy is, “if one practices hope than hopefulness will become habitual.” Helping individuals realize their potential by focusing on their previous accomplishments and reflection on past successes will help individuals develop and promote positive self-concept.
